Date: February 25, 2025 (9:00am – 3:00 pm Pacific)
Location: Online via Zoom
Workshop Organizers: Annemarie Baltay (USGS), Rachel Abercrombie (Boston University)
SCEC Award and Report: 24067
The SCEC/ USGS Community Stress Drop Validation Group was formed in 2021 to understand the physical controls and methodological reasons for variance in stress drops, so that they can be used reliably by the earthquake science community. The main activities over the past three years were to use a common dataset of earthquake records from the 2019 Ridgecrest sequence by members of the community, to estimate stress drop, corner frequency, or other point-source spectral estimates of the earthquake energetics. To date, over 20 different research groups have participated in submitting source parameter estimates and a very successful BSSA special issue is well underway discussing much of this work. Papers already published online are listed at the bottom of the page.
The workshop will be conducted in three parts:
Part I: is to compare and contrast the results obtained to date, discussing where we agree and disagree. We invite participants to contribute to the discussion in answering questions such as: How did this experience cause you to change your methods and procedures? What do you now think should be in a “best practice manual” for measuring spectral stress drop? What are the things we need to focus on to resolve outstanding differences in results? We expect to include discussion of apparent discrepancies in stress drop scaling with magnitude and depth, as well as differences in site and path attenuation functions.
Part II will present a first synthetic dataset that we hope people will be willing to process with their various methods, focused on understanding uncertainties in isolating source, path and site using band-limited spectra. These synthetic time-series waveforms were developed with the Stochastic Method of Simulation (SMSIM) using a range of input source, path and site parameters.
Part III is focused on enabling this active and ongoing community research to continue, defining its direction, and obtaining necessary support (for the organisation of the community and for individual participants). We envisage writing a collaborative NSF proposal and invite all interested to join as co-PIs, or (non-funded) supporters/collaborators.
As always, the majority of the workshop will be discussion focussed, and we welcome broad community participation throughout the workshop.

Using a common dataset, researchers estimate stress drop from the 2019 Ridgecrest earthquake sequence. As a community we will compare and validate the estimates to determine physical controls on stress drop variability. Current focus on 55 specific events. The Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC) fosters a diverse and inclusive community where everyone feels safe, productive, and welcome. We expect all participants in SCEC-supported events to uphold this commitment by adhering to the SCEC Activities Code of Conduct.
The SCEC Annual Meeting brings together 400-500 participants worldwide to share breakthroughs, assess progress, and chart a collaborative path for earthquake science. All of the Center activities are presented, analyzed, and woven into a set of priorities for SCEC to pursue in the future.
